love drake: screen caps by thweatted love drake: screen caps by thweatted
I went to Target during my lunch break to buy some hand sanitizer and saw the Darkwing Duck DVD set and I was like "What?!" and then I copped that joint.

As a youngster I noticed the animation varied in episodes but never knew or really cared why, so I decided to look at the credits. I always liked the crispy clean look of the Japan animation, but I also liked the Aussie animation which has a lot more personality than the others, methinks.

With that said, I sketched these headshots from the "Comic Book Capers" episode, trying to learn to draw a better DW I guess...uh 15 years later.

OMG I'm so lame. Just by looking at the sketches I knew what episode was, just from the style. Wow. I need a life.

Good job! One of the best eps to base your character design on if you ask me. I love this one adn I love the way it looks all throughout. Some of the best expressions come out of this one.

In a way, I like the over-exaggerated Tiny Toons-styled episodes, but I also like the more subtle episodes as well. It's such a great show I rarely notice anyways. Your sketches captured Drake's expressions perfectly.

I liked the animation in Comic Capers. It reminded me of some of the second season Bonkers episodes. 83

Also, you draw Darkwing pretty much perfectly. ^__^

Comic Book Capers is just about my favourite episode ever. I always got a kick out of Little Running Gag. XD

Really great job. I can never the details of his face right, but you did him perfectly. And I'm such a dork, I can quote exactly what Drake was saying in the two sketches on the right-hand side.

Top right: "and...why am I wearing a cowboy hat?"

Bottom right: "Whaaat?!" (after Launchpad asks him something about laundry detergent)

Yeah, I noticed that too. Not only does the animation style change from episode to episode, but some are more littered with continuity errors than others. Anyone else notice that in Quack of Ages Quackerjack spent the entire episode with orange hands instead of white?

i keep trying to sing the darkwing duck theme song but for some very odd reason it keeps changing into the mario bros theme ... so very odd.

I would noticed that too. I always figured, because I didn't know better, that they would have one preson drawing the ep and then a different preson would do a different ep. OF course, as I said, I didn't know better because I always though just ONE preson would be doing the drawings...

Lookin good, I've always tended to make his "cheeks" longer than they should be.

I loved it when his forehead would get all ruffled. Made him look old ^_^

Diffrence in animation between shows...hehe, what I used to call "Team A" and "Team B". One of them always seemed to be the newbies in training doing episodes.
Sweet Darkwing Duck sketchies

The same could be said for Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, Tale Spin and others in the same afternoon spot, Ducktales and Goof troop too. The animation of every episode seemed to be done by different teams. I think they wanted to divide the work evenly between the different houses of animation that they had. I recall when the Aussie animation studio shut down. It was a sad day indeed. Anyways, to the picture. I LOVE DW!! You captured him rather well. One thing I have NEVER been good at drawing beaked creatures. It's so hard XD Great work on this +

I noticed some real changes between episodes too. Some of them looked a lot like Tiny Toon Adventures in the way they were animated, maybe that's the Aussie studio you're talking about.

I think it was. There's a webpage that lists the TTA animation groups and describes their styles. If I find it again I'll look for the name of the Australian one.

I love Darkwing Duck, it's a shame that the DVDs will never reach Italy like DuckTales, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain and Chip and Dale rescue rangers!
